Dr. Ates is a Full Professor of Economics at the Ankara University of Social Sciences (ASBU). As an academic and practitioner, his research examines the intersection of innovation, structural competitiveness, and socio-technical transformation, with a primary focus on defense economics and the global defense industry.
Dr. Ates’s current research centers on the diffusion and synergy between the defense and civilian sectors, particularly the evolution and integration of dual-use technologies. He extensively analyzes the transition of defense ecosystems from buyer-client models to competitor-exporter paradigms, specifically within NATO countries and emerging defense markets. His work explores sovereign defense capabilities, military-civil fusion, and NATO interoperability, addressing the shifting geopolitical power dynamics that shape modern security.
He holds a PhD in Social and Economic Sciences from the Vienna University of Technology (TU Wien) and earned his undergraduate and graduate degrees from the Vienna University of Economics and Business (WU). His academic journey includes a postdoctoral fellowship at Harvard University, Oxford University, International Institute for Advanced System Analysis, Austria (IIASA) and National Taiwan University.
